Travel on a Dime

The idea of traveling for some–is just that, an idea. We all love time off–look at how many people complain about returning to work on a Monday after the weekend! But most of us don’t get to travel enough. Be it low funds, or lacking sufficient time to take a long vacation. Regardless of the situation you need a break from reality so you can maintain your sanity.

Travel gives us a break from the mundane and daily stresses of life. Travel provides many things such as new discoveries, a new scenery as well as experiences and most important—relaxation. I have a couple ways in which you can get away.


By now you have heard the term stay-cation. It’s when you take a vacation in your hometown or state. Surely there are places in your area you’d love to visit, and when I say visit, I mean don’t sleep at your house! The purpose of a vacation is to leave your everyday environment and surround yourself with something new. Is there a fancy hotel you’d love to visit but the cost is over $300 a night? you have one of two options; either save for a couple months for this hotel stay-cation or take a few vacation work days off during the week. Weekday hotel prices are significantly lower than Friday-Sunday. A stay-cation may not be as long length wise as a traditional vacation of a week or two weeks but it will provide the fix you need to continue on. I recommend three days minimum for this vacation type. Enjoy the hotel pool, order room service, book a spa package, sight-see, do things a tourist would when they come to your town. Even if you know the history and attractions in your area it will be cool to experience it the way others who are not natives experience it. Most importantly don’t forget you are on vacation! That being said,  make sure you’re completely focused on relaxing. Have an away message set up on e-mails, use your usual travel babysitters and disconnect from the world just like you would if you were across country or in another one.


Another vacation type is the weekend get aways. Technically it’s more than two days because generally you’ll work either Monday-Wednesday or Monday-Thursday and arrive at your destination for a three or four-day vacation get away. These are best for a weekend to Miami or a relatively inexpensive island like the Bahamas or Puerto Rico. A great time to take these are during national holidays when there’s no school or work the following Monday. You get the beach, the sun–suntan, and to partake in another culture. Keeps your heart healthy

Both sexes benefit from taking a vacation every two years as oppose to every six years this will lessen the risk of coronary heart disease or heart attacks. “It shows how the body reacts to a lifestyle of stress,” as reported by Elaine Eaker author of a study conducted by the Framingham Heart Study. “This is real evidence that vacations are important to your physical health.”

More productivity

Upon your return to work you will gain increased productivity. Research states this is a part of our genetic make-up. “The importance of restoration is rooted in our physiology. Human beings aren’t designed to expend energy continuously,” The Times reported. “Rather, we’re meant to pulse between spending and recovering energy.”

Closer family bonds

Shared experiences bring forth memories even when family vacations can have their own set of stressors the benefits outweigh the risks. “Shared family memories and time spent together isolated from ordinary everyday activities (school, work and so on) help to promote these positive ties,” states Psychology expert Susan Krauss Whitbourne.

Newer perspectives

CNN reported that when you step away from the problems and stresses you’re facing, you’re bound to get a better perspective and come out with a more satisfying answer. An example of this, according to CNN, would be when you ask your friend for advice on a situation. The friend is removed from the scenario and thus can offer advice more easily.

Increased mental power

All those long grueling hours put into work does nothing but drain you. “The processing capacity of the conscious mind is limited,” said, Daniel Levitin, director of the Laboratory for Music, Cognition, and Expertise at McGill University. Your brain basically has two modes: 1. Undistracted focused on a task and 2. Daydreaming and mental wandering. When one is active, the other is not. A vacation gives your brain time to reset.

Keeps stress at bay

Workers who take regular time off are less likely to experience burnout which makes them more creative and productive in their jobs.

Mental Clarity

A rested relaxed mind can help the body heal better.”The impact that taking a vacation has on one’s mental health is profound,” said Francine Lederer, a clinical psychologist in Los Angeles who specializes in stress and relationship management. “Most people have better life perspective and are more motivated to achieve their goals after a vacation, even if it is a 24-hour time-out.”

As you can see there are a number of health benefits that accompany taking a vacation which gives you all the more reason to start researching your next destination.
